PUNCH COMBINATIONS WITH LOW KICK PAD WORK

One of my favorite types of Muay Thai pad work to do is this Muay Thai low kick drill! This is a great kicking drill especially if you have my style of fighting which is very similar to the Dutch style of kick boxing – hard hand combinations finished with brutal leg kicks.

This Muay Thai low kick technique drill is great because unlike heavy bag training or light sparring, you can work on everything that makes a low roundhouse kick so devastating. It will help you find your distancing, flow with your hand combinations, work on reaction speed and throw 100% power into each and every low roundhouse kick.

The Muay Thai low kick is a crucial technique that helps limit your opponents movement and deliver some serious damage, which could eventually lead to a fight stoppage.

As you progress as a nak muay, you need to learn how to set up certain low kick techniques so you are able to land them without the risk of getting them checked or blocked.

6 Muay Thai Low Kick Setup Techniques

  1. Fake and Drag – Fake a low kick by turning your hip slightly and dragging your back foot. This will ideally draw your opponent’s leg up to try to check your attack. Once they plant their foot back down, that’s when you throw the low kick.

The Basics of a Muay Thai Low Kick

It wasn’t until “The Fight That Changed History” where the Muay Thai low kick was seen as an incredibly effective and damaging weapon.

When there were no low kicks allowed, kick boxers could bounce around and not worry about having their legs chopped down. Now that 100% of Muay Thai fighters and kick boxers utilize the low kick, it’s important to know how to throw the Muay Thai low kick properly to maximize damage and limit the chances of having it blocked or counters.

Muay Thai Low Kick Basics

A few key tips about the basics on how to throw a muay thai low kick.

  • Kick with your shin. Not your foot! If you end throwing a low kick with your foot and you have it checked by your opponents knee or shin, chances are you will do some serious damage to your foot and possibly even break it.
  • Keep a defense. Just because you’re low kicking doesn’t mean you can forget about your defense....
