Alex Silva was born two months premature and was bullied in school for his smaller stature. He was not born powerful, nor particularly physically gifted. Instead, Alex Silva had to earn his accolades the hard way.

Champions are born, not made – right? Wrong.

Some are born with immense talent. That much is true. But there are many who were born with no gifts at all. Furthermore, they may even have been born with curses.

How? As you’ll see in the Evolve MMA video, it’s about taking your steps forward again and again and again:

People who are strong, both physically and mentally, are often not born that way.

Let’s take as an example an all-time great UFC champion in Georges St. Pierre. John Danaher, St. Pierre’s BJJ coach, noted that what was exceptional about Georges when he first stepped into Danaher’s gym was how unexceptional he was.

He was not in any way special. But look at him now. He fought “The Prodigy” B.J. Penn and beat him twice. This is the same prodigy who became a BJJ world champion in just three years, the same prodigy beaten by an “unexceptional” man. Again, how did he go from an unexceptional man to beating a world champion? By moving forward.

Many of us are not born exceptional, but we can become that by moving forward. As the cliche goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. It was built brick by brick, step by step. Each step forward you take will bring you one step closer to where you want to be. But the secret is that you have to keep on stepping. No matter what, you keep on stepping.

If you stop where you are, you will stay where you are. But if you keep on moving forward, you might just make something out of yourself. Maybe even a champion. Because champions are made, not born – right?
